Marelize van Zyl is an accomplished professional with over 32 years of experience in civil engineering, as well as significant expertise in financial management. Currently serving as a Financial Manager at ES Consulting Engineers (Pty) Ltd, Ms. van Zyl combines her engineering background with her financial skills to oversee the financial aspects of complex infrastructure projects. Her ability to manage both technical and financial dimensions of large-scale projects has made her an integral part of the team.
Ms. van Zyl holds a BCom degree from the University of the Free State, which complements her technical qualifications, including a National Higher Diploma in Civil Engineering from the Central University of Technology. This unique combination of qualifications has equipped her with a well-rounded skill set in both civil engineering and financial management.
In her career, Ms. van Zyl has been involved in the management of extensive road maintenance projects for the South African National Roads Agency (SANRAL), managing budgets for multi-million-rand contracts and ensuring projects are delivered on time and within budget. She has worked on high-profile projects across South Africa, including the maintenance and rehabilitation of national roads, the development of pedestrian facilities, and the implementation of Labour-Intensive Projects (LIP) as part of the Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP).
Her earlier experience as Senior Manager for Engineering Services at Mangaung Metro Municipality involved overseeing a vast network of roads and stormwater systems, with an annual budget of over R200 million. She led teams in planning, designing, constructing, and maintaining roads and stormwater systems, as well as implementing infrastructure management systems, paving the way for sustainable urban development.
As a registered Professional Engineering Technologist with the Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA), Ms. van Zyl has a deep understanding of both the technical and financial intricacies of large-scale engineering projects. Her leadership and extensive project management experience make her a key contributor to the success of any civil engineering or infrastructure project.
